Planning a water garden the first thing to is location, size and of it
Location: Key aspects consider location the pond are:
- Sun : It is recommended for proper operation of water space as an ecosystem , which receives about 6 hours of sun per day . The excess sun exposure , help the growth of algae .
Too much shadow, would complicate the full flowering of water lilies and other species.
Can not have ideal conditions , the solution in both cases is given by the placement of appropriate species. Covering the sun in the first case , and varieties that grow smoothly , in the shade.- Trees : either by falling leaves , and by the action of its roots , it is not advisable to construct ponds in proximity to trees .
- Wind : Like the above, should be taken into account the prevailing winds in the area, by the autumn leaf fall . That can pollute the pond
Size and shape: Depending basically of esthetic desire and its inclusion within the landscape, varying in size and shape of the pond .
You can choose pre-defined forms , as in the case of pond preformed fiberglass or pot used as a mini pond , or design our own model for what should be considered , the availability of building materials to be used
A good tip is marked with ropes and stakes the outline of what will be our space to get a better idea of the work and give the dug .
Depth : Depending on the purpose of our pond, as a general rule you can say that a pond should be 50 to 60 cm in the deep , leaving about 30 cm step for species that do not require to be so submerged (Marginal or Bog plants) .
If you want to raise large fish such as koi carp are encouraged to go in the middle sector reaching 80-90 cm , this will protect from frost in winter and summer high temperatures.
Building Materials
The materials commonly used for Waterproofing are following :
|
Material |
Features |
Advantages |
Disadvantages |
|
Polyethylene |
The usable minimum thickness of 200 microns , is achieved up to 500 microns . |
It's Cheap |
is broken or easily . |
|
PVC |
The thickness is 4 mm . The roll width is 1.4 m. Stick with chemical welding , thus achieving the desired size. Small spaces are used to large |
Very durable : 25. |
It is expensive , compared with polyethylene. |
|
Armed concrete |
It is used in formal designs . Both small and large .

Building a Pond with Polyethylene film
The steps for construction are simple , once defined the steps : You must calculate the width of cloth to use. The simple rule is added to the width of the pool , twice the depth and also adds the remaining side for termination (30 to 40 cm per side )
In the following outline steps we can see1 . After marking the outline with stakes and a rope . You start digging , reaching the profanity of the first step ( recommended 30 cm ). It checks the level of the edges . You can also remove sod from the edges for reuse after the termination.
2 . It marks and dig the next level ( Part deep ), checking levels .
3 . Place sand in the bottom , to protect the polyethylene and that this copy right .
4 . Place the cloth of polyethylene . Avoiding stretching and wrinkles . It holds the edges with a weight ( brick , stone ) Ensuring no damage at all times .
5 . It will start to fill with water , cloth , taking the form of anger pond and flattening wrinkles , with the weight of water .
6 . Once filled , until the desired level , cut the edges of polyethylene . Must leave the safety wide enough to completion with the chosen material ( bricks , wood , stone , sod , etc. ).

MINI - PONDS:
In confined spaces such as balconies , terraces or patios , you can have a waterproof container placing water space as a mini - ponds. For balconies and terraces , you have to take into account the total weight of these containers , when to define the size .
Regarding the selection of plants , many species that are perfectly suited to them . Swamp using small to medium sized ( Equisetum , dwarf papyrus , Thalia , lilies , etc . ) floating water lilies and varieties adapted to these conditions .
